About the Event
In Giegerich's What is Soul? there is a section titled “The historicity of soulful feelings”. Among the many artists and phenomena he mentions are the German Minnesingers, musicians of the medieval aristocratic class who composed joyous and tortured odes of devotion to an unattainable lady, a tradition known as “courtly love” that had originated among the troubadours of southern France. This soul phenomenon that was contemporaneous with the cult of the Virgin Mary and the sor mystica of alchemy, will be explored with particular attention to Petarch, whose poems to Laura represent both its peak and completion.
